Faiz Munshi - Cisco Systems Faiz Munshi
Global Systems Engineer, Cisco Systems

Faiz is a native of Bombay, India and moved to the United States in 2001. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Computer Engineering in 2006 and has been working with Cisco as a Sales Engineer since then. He is a key member of the Financial Services focused Global Accounts team which encompasses the most demanding and strategic global enterprise customers of Cisco. As an intern at GE Healthcare during his college tenure, he was the recipient of The Next CEO of GE Healthcare - 2005 Best Intern Award.

Faiz has also developed an intrusion protection system for wireless handheld devices, while in Virginia Tech and published a research paper for IEEE. This paper won the 2007 Best Paper Award in the Internet and Digital Economy Track. He is also a board member of the New York Young Professionals Chapter of American India Foundation spearheading the initiative on increasing the non-profit organizations digital presence.

President of York College/City University of New York

Dr. Marcia V. Keizs, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, attended the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada (B.A. 1967), and Teachers College, Columbia University (M.A. 1971 and Ed.D. 1984). She holds a certificate in Educational Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (1995). Dr. Keizs has over 30 years of experience in the CUNY system as both an administrator and a professor. Before her appointment as president of York College, she was the vice president of academic affairs at Bronx Community College/CUNY for seven years.

Effective February 14, 2005, Dr. Keizs became the sixth president of York College in Jamaica, Queens. Under Dr. Keizs’ leadership, York College has strengthened its academic programs, raised its admissions standards, boosted its student recruitment and retention and raised its faculty grants by 80 percent.

Dr. Keizs was recently nominated to a new State Commission on Higher Education by State Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith and was appointed by former Gov. Eliot Spitzer. She has served on the boards of the National Council on Black American Affairs (Northeast), Teachers College Alumni Council, Morris Heights Health Center in the Bronx and the Association of Black Women in Higher Education.  Dr. Keizs is the founding editor of the New York Carib News and has published articles in her area of specialty, Afro American literature.

Portland Community College District President

Dr. Preston Pulliams took over as PCC’s fifth president May 24, 2004. He came to Portland Community College after serving as vice-chancellor for Community Colleges for the State University of New York (SUNY) where he coordinated and directed the activities of the 30 community colleges in the SUNY system.

Before joining the SUNY administration, Pulliams served as president of Orange County Community College in Middletown, New York from 1997 to 2003. From 1993 to 1997 he was president of the Highland Lakes Campus of the Oakland Community College District in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He served as vice-president for student affairs at the Community College of Philadelphia from 1985 to 1993, and he also served as dean of student services and counselor at Muskegon Community College from 1972 to 1984.

Dr. Pulliams is a community college graduate, earning his A.S. in Science from Muskegon Community College. He received a B.S. in Social Science from Michigan State University, an MA in Counseling and Personnel from Western Michigan University and an Ed.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan.

Doug Baldrey has fifty years of experience in post secondary, technology-based education as a professor and associate dean of the School of Engineering and Industrial Technology. He is project coordinator for the Center for Energy Efficiency and Building Science (CEEBS). Funded by NYSERDA and LIPA, the Center has programs addressing home performance and multifamily buildings.
Kevin A. Cahill - New York State Assemblymember

New York State Assemblymember & Chair of the Assembly Standing Committee on Energy

Assemblymember Kevin Cahill represents the 101st Assembly District, which includes most of Ulster County and the Town and Village of Rhinebeck in Dutchess County. Elected in 1998 as the candidate for the Democratic, Independence and Liberal parties, he was re-elected in 2000, 2002 and 2004 as the candidate for the Democratic, Independence and Working Families parties.

Mr. Cahill is the Chair of the Assembly Standing Committee on Energy and serves on the Health, Higher Education, Ways and Means and Economic Development, Job Creation, Commerce and Industry Committees. He is also the Chairman of the Democratic Study Group. Mr. Cahill has previously served on several other committees including Steering, Consumer Affairs, Codes, Real Property Tax, Local Government and Children and Families. He was the Assembly spokesperson for Community Corrections, a member of the task force on Local Government Finance Reform, former Chair of the Assembly Ethics and Guidance Committee and the longest tenured Chair of the Legislative Task Force on People with Disabilities.

He has a strong record on the environment, civil rights, labor, health care and women’s issues. Mr. Cahill was, and remains, a strong advocate for local real property tax reform. A graduate of the State University of New York at New Paltz and Albany Law School, Mr. Cahill is also dedicated to quality, affordable education for all residents of New York State.

Tria Case

Executive Director, CUNY Center for Sustainable Energy

Tria Case is the University Director of Sustainability for The City University of New York (CUNY).  In this capacity Ms. Case is responsible for assisting CUNY’s 23 institutions of higher education to meet the goal of reducing CUNY’s carbon footprint by 30% in ten years and more broadly to integrate sustainability in to the fabric of the university.  In addition, as the University Director of Sustainability, Ms. Case oversees the CUNY Task Force on Sustainability and its associated committees.

Ms. Case also serves as the Executive Director for the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE) located at CUNY’s Bronx Community College.  The mission of CSE is to promote the use of renewable and efficient energy technologies in urban communities and more importantly to implement it through education, training, workforce development, research, and project facilitation.  CSE has been named the action arm for the City of New York in their partnership with the Department of Energy’s Solar America City Initiative.

Vicki Colello - NYSERDA

Vicki is a Project Manager with the NYS Energy Research & Development Authority, where she works on energy efficiency and renewable energy workforce development, along with other areas. Prior to working with NYSERDA, Vicki was an independent consultant working with the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) for ten years, and she was formerly a policy analyst with the NYS Energy Office, working in energy efficiency and solar energy. Vicki is the Chair of the National Organizing Committee for Solar 2009, a major national solar energy conference put on annually by the American Solar Energy Society, which will be held in Buffalo, NY, in May 2009.
Vincent Cozzolino - The Solar Energy Consortium Vincent Cozzolino
President & CEO, The Solar Energy Consortium

A physicist and electrical engineer with over thirty years experience with the IBM Corporation, Cozzolino heads the taskforce of The Solar Energy Consortium. He has held several vice president positions in high technology fields and was instrumental in the building and commissioning of IBM’s latest 300mm computer chip fab. Cozzolino has led global teams and managed thousands of employees across many countries for IBM. As president and CEO, Cozzolino works to bring together a state-wide team of academic, business, community, environmental, utility and labor leaders to establish a new solar energy industry in New York State.
Christopher Marx - Ulster County Community College Christopher Marx
Director, Continuing and Professional Education, Ulster County Community College

Christopher Marx is Director of Continuing and Professional Education for SUNY Ulster. Previously, Chris worked for the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and was Associate Director of a non-profit youth workforce development agency in Poughkeepsie called the Youth Resource Development Corporation. Chris also spent two years as a volunteer teacher and program director in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. Chris has a Bachelor's Degrees in philosophy and geology and a Master's in Education.
Frank Surdey
Principal Economist, NYS Department of Labor

Frank Surdey serves as a Managing Labor Economist for the New York State Department of Labor, Division of Research and Statistics.  The Research Division is recognized as the primary source of labor market information in the State.  He currently has statewide responsibility for economic development issues/projects and is the Division’s lead on clean and green technology research.  Previously (2002-2007), Mr. Surdey served as Regional Administrator for the Division Of Employment Services in the Hudson Valley Region – with responsibilities for seven local workforce areas. The Employment Services Division provides labor exchange services, maintains a Talent Bank/Job Bank, and delivers a variety of business services including recruitments, job fairs and HR consulting.

From 1991-2002, Mr. Surdey managed operations and served as Regional Economist for the Department’s Research Division in the seven-county Hudson Valley Region.  Earlier in his career, Mr. Surdey also managed Research Division operations in the Mohawk Valley and North Country regions and served as a labor market analyst in the Southern Tier.

Frank Surdey began his career with the State Labor Department soon after receiving a B.S. in Business Economics from the State University of New York, College at Oneonta in 1976.

Kathy brings over 30 years of experience in marketing and selling contract training to business and industry to your organization. She specializes in “how to” techniques for prospecting, effective sales calls, solution selling, proposals, closing, contracts, fulfillment, follow up and more.

Her experience in adult education came from 31 years “in the trenches” at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Having worked both in credit and continuing education in the Center for Business and Technology and the Business and Technology Division, Kathy is a contract training professional with experience in all areas of marketing, selling training and consulting to businesses. She understands how to make proactive sales calls with targeted, qualified businesses resulting in high close rates, large contracts and the development of long-term relationships.

The bottom line is that Kathy “gets it”. Thirty years’ experience of running a business in an academic environment can provide knowledge and shortcuts to help your organization grow a cutting edge sales team.

Dr. Rick Beal

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry

Dr. Richard Beal has been working in ESF Outreach since 2001 and is currently the Associate Director of Educational Outreach and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environmental and Forest Biology. Rick is currently Co-PI on a three-year $1.4 million grant from the NSF that brings college research into Central and Western New York high schools and middle schools through the ESF Science Corps. Rick has been active in several outreach projects during his time at ESF. He participated in committees that developed both the new Urban Ecology Minor as well as the Urban Ecology course. Rick is a board member for Project Watershed and is a member of the Onondaga Lake Partnership Outreach Committee. Rick received a BS degree in biochemistry from the University of Buffalo in 1991 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the same institution in 1997. He was a Peace Corps teacher in Eritrea (East Africa) from 1997 to 1998 and has over ten 10 years of experience in coaching soccer.

 

David Bernstein

David Bernstein is Assistant Dean of English as a Second Language at Westchester Community College where he has been developing and running ESL programs for the college since 1991. The college serves over 4,000 English language learners annually at 12 locations. Mr. Bernstein has an MAT in TESOL and bilingual education from Georgetown University and a BA in economics and Spanish from Guilford College. He began his TESOL career in Bogotá, Colombia where he taught and managed EFL programs in corporate and non-profit settings.

Dr. Joe Bertolino is the Vice President for Student Affairs and Chair of the Department of Student Personnel at Queens College/CUNY. He oversees 20+ administrative departments and one academic depart-ment. An award winning author, teacher, and student affairs professional, Dr Bertolino has spoken at 750+ institutions nationwide on social justice, leadership development and LGBTQ issues. In 2007, he was named Diversity Artist of the Year by Campus Activities Magazine.

Linda Chin is the Program Coordinator of the GED Bridge to Health Careers Program at the Adult Learning Center at LaGuardia Community College (CUNY). The GED Bridge to Health Careers Program is funded by the New York City Mayor's Office of Adult Education to assist students prepare for a career in the health-care field while studying for the GED exam. She has a B.A. in Political Science from New York University and an M.A.T. from the School for International Training.

Amy Dalsimer has directed a variety of adult literacy, workforce development, and college transition initiatives at the City University of New York. At LaGuardia Community College, she currently serves as a program and curriculum development consultant on the GED Bridge to Health Careers and the GED Bridge to Business Careers Programs. Amy also conducts student outcome and assessment research for the Division of Adult and Continuing Education.

State University of New York established the SUNY Youth Sports Institute (www.youthsportsny.org) to address the challenges posed by organized, non-school youth sports programs. In partnership with Continuing Education departments and with the Institute's academic advisory board, Tim Donovan led development of all phases; statewide training network, curriculum for parents and coaches, recruited trainers, established call center/customer service center, branding and marketing support and oversaw technical platform. A graduate of Syracuse University and formerly a successful entrepreneur in media and technology, Tim speaks on the nature of leadership; and how youth sports coaches can develop or hinder creativity and leadership roles so critical to business, public service and healthy communities.

Suri oversees adult and continuing education at CUNY, which had 270,000 enrollments 2007-2008. In her role, which includes supporting workforce development efforts, she also convenes a university-wide committee focused on offering sustainability-related training and education programs to workers, employers, unions and other organizations.

Jeanne Eschbach is the Director of Continuing Education at Corning Community College.  As Director, she developed CCC’s More After 4:00 program which offers working adults the chance to complete an Associate’s degree in two years, attending two nights per week and Saturday.  She also works with local businesses to offer college credit programming to incumbent workers.  She has been the campus leader in refining programs for students to earn credit for prior learning. Jeanne has a MA from Binghamton University and a BA from University of Pennsylvania.

In his current, Mr. Georges organizes and oversees the advisement and enrollment of returning and prospective students, the training of staff in customer service, and the updating of registration policies.

Mark Retersdorf has had a long career in sales. A graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh with a BA in Psychology, Mark decided upon graduation to pursue a career in Business Management. He worked for Marriot Corp, CVS Pharmacy and Pepsi-Cola before becoming President of the Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce in 1991, where he doubled membership in the first 2 years. In 1996, he was hired away from the chamber by a Board Member to work in the Telecom business, starting a new division for the company in this new thing called, “Internet.” In three years, he drove the business from 0 clients to over 8000. The company was sold for 15 million dollars. Mark stayed in the Telecom business 8 more years working for several Telecom companies where he won many awards and was in charge of teaching new recruits on selling skills. In January of 2008 he was hired by Fulton Montgomery Community College as their new “Workforce Development Specialist.”

Dr. Chuck Spuches is Associate Dean for Outreach and Instructional Quality at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), and an adjunct associate professor in the Syracuse University graduate program in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation. In addition to his administrative duties, Spuches teaches traditional classroom and online courses on educational project management, planned change and innovation, college teaching, and college/university outreach, and serves on dissertation committees in instructional design and adult education.He earned a doctorate from Syracuse University in instructional design. Prior to joining ESF he was on the staff of the Syracuse University Center for Instructional Development and a faculty member (tenured) in the college of arts and sciences at Idaho State University.

Maureen Wakefield is Continuing Education Coordinator for Outreach at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Wakefield reports directly to Dr. Charles M. Spuches, Associate Dean for Outreach, Instructional Quality and Technology. As Continuing Education Coordinator, she is responsible to coordinate SUNY-ESF conferences, workshops, meetings and seminars as well as to provide support to SUNY-ESF non-matriculated students. Wakefield also oversees the development and implementation of a $1.2 million U.S. Department of Labor grant to develop post-baccalaureate certificates in the areas of Engineering, Biotechnology, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Renewable Energy. Wakefield earned a masters degree from Syracuse University in instructional design, development and evaluation from the School of Education in 1986 and her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY College at Oswego’s School of Education in 1979.
